The History of Dinstuhl's
A MEMPHIS TRADITION SINCE 1902
For more than 120 years, Dinstuhl's Fine Candy Company has been creating handcrafted chocolates, candies, and confections that have become a part of Memphis tradition. What began as a small neighborhood candy shop in 1902 has grown into one of the South's most beloved candy makers, built on generations of family craftsmanship, time-honored recipes, and an unwavering commitment to quality.
The Dinstuhl story began when Charles Martin Dinstuhl, Sr. opened his candy business with a simple mission: create the finest candies using the best ingredients available. His passion for quality quickly earned a loyal following, and in the 1920s his son, Charles Martin Dinstuhl, Jr. joined the family business. Together, they perfected recipes that would become family treasures, including the legendary Chocolate Pecan Fudge that remains a customer favorite today.
FIVE GENERATIONS OF CANDY MAKING
As the business grew, so did the family tradition. Charles Martin Dinstuhl, Jr.'s son, Edward Eugene "Gene" Dinstuhl, learned the craft from his father and grandfather while helping sustain the company during World War II.
Gene later trained under two renowned New York candy makers, bringing fresh ideas and new techniques back to Memphis. During this period, he introduced several recipes that would become Dinstuhl's classics, including Cashew Crunch and Chocolate Covered Strawberries. These additions helped usher in a new era while preserving the traditions that made Dinstuhl's special.
In 1970 Gary Eugene Dinstuhl became the fourth generation to carry on the family legacy.
Dinstuhl's experienced tremendous growth, evolving from a modest 400 square foot shop, into an 11,000-square-foot manufacturing facility capable of serving a growing customer base while maintaining the handcrafted quality that defined the company from the beginning.
PRESERVING A HISTORIC LEGACY
In 2003, Judy and Larry Moss purchased Dinstuhl's Fine Candy Company and saved the historic business from closing its doors. Their dedication ensured that a beloved Memphis institution - and the traditions, recipes, and craftsmanship that defined it - would continue for future generations. Their commitment was not simply to continue a business, but to preserve a legacy built on quality, family values, and more than a century of candy-making excellence.
Today as co-owners, Judy & Larry Moss, Rebecca Dinstuhl, and Marissa Magdovitz lead the company with a shared dedication to preserving the values that have guided Dinstuhl's for more than a century while thoughtfully expanding its reach beyond Memphis.
Rebecca Dinstuhl serves as President, and Marissa Magdovitz is the Director of Operations. At the heart of the candy kitchen is Andrew Dinstuhl, a fifth-generation candy maker who continues the family tradition by crafting many of the recipes that have delighted customers for generations. His hands-on involvement ensures that the heritage and expertise passed down through the Dinstuhl family remain a living part of every batch produced today.
CRAFTED BY HAND, ONE BATCH AT A TIME
While much has changed since 1902, our approach to candy making remains remarkably similar. We continue to use premium ingredients such as fresh butter, rich cream, brown sugar, pecans and fine chocolate. Each recipe is carefully prepared in small batches and handcrafted with the same attention to detail that has defined Dinstuhl's for over a century.
Our commitment to quality extends throughout every aspect of production and is reflected in our Kosher certification by the Vaad Hakehiloth of Memphis.
TRUSTED ICONS AND CELEBRATED ACROSS AMERICA
Over the years, Dinstuhl's has been honored to create custom confections for some of the nation's most recognizable events, organizations and destinations such as Elvis Presley, Graceland, the Kentucky Derby, Super Bowl XL, the NBA Finals, the Breeder's Cup, QVC, and many other special occasions.
These experiences have helped establish Dinsuthl's as more than a local favorite. Recognition such as "Best Candy Store in the South" and "#1 Fudge in America" reflects the appreciation our customers have shown for what many call a true "Sweet Taste of the South."
OUR PROMISE
For five generations, Dinstuhl's has remained dedicated to one simple principle: never compromise on quality. Every piece of fudge, chocolate, caramel, and candy that leaves our kitchen represents more than a recipe... it represents a family tradition that has been carefully preserved for 124 years.
Whether you are visiting one of our stores, sharing a gift with someone special, or enjoying a favorite treat at home, we are honored to be part of your sweetest memories.
From our family to yours, thank you for making Dinstuhl's a Memphis tradition since 1902.
